It's funny because most of the stuff in that article are the things I always disliked about Fight Club but nobody agreed with back then.

This is difficult because I'm not that into movies in general. Just doing a top 10 here, this is mostly based off of movies that I'd happily watch again:

    Kung Fu Hustle
    Ex Machina
    Dr. Strangelove
    The Lighthouse
    Seven Samurai
    There Will Be Blood
    No Country for Old Men
    The Prestige
    Uncut Gems
    Princess Bride

In not even going to read that because I watched Fight Club again recently for the first time in years and it was pure delight. Even funnier than I remembered.

I didn't even know it was supposed to be funny. I remember the relief when it was finally over; I only watched the whole thing because a friend wanted me to. It was something I wouldn't do back then if I didn't like a movie.

But it's not often I'll watch an old favorite and still like it. And maybe I'm just getting old and dumb, but there is a whole category of films that are supposed to be knowing-smirk funny vs. ha-ha funny which I can no longer tolerate for a second. In fact I could put all of Woody Allen, another old favorite, into that box. It's off-putting when I'm expected to laugh (or rather, smirk silently) at the sheeple/dumb people/less enlightened.

The humor of Fight Club to me is in laughing at the main characters, who I find to be very sympathetic, so I'm effectively laughing at myself, the absurdities of the society I live in, and exaggerated but in a sense natural responses to living in that society.

It's absurd humor. I don't find it mean-spirited at all. Rather the opposite.

I understand that it's not to everyone's taste, but for me it's spot on.

I never liked Woody Allen movies.

Ed Norton's character's tears left a shroud of Turin stain on Meatloaf's man boobs. They stole liposuctioned fat to make artisanal soap to sell in high end department stores to target the socio-economic bracket the fat was sourced from. The tagline of the the theatrical release was "Mischief. Mayhem. Soap." It was wry comedy, sure, but it was a comedy through and through.
I'm suspicious of people who say they'll die for a flag but won't wear a mask for their neighbor.
