Suburban whitey here. American Pie and Can't Hardly Wait nail it. Also the first couple seasons of Buffy but we're talking movies here, people and rules are rules.

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?
I went through a few high schools, myself, but for the last one I'd say a combination of Breakfast Club and Return of the Living Dead. I was part of the latter clique.
not a movie but taylor swift's "you belong with me" video is the first thing that comes to mind. it's the big t-shirts and jeans/pj pants thing, plus she's wearing shit frumpy clothes in the bench scene, that shit is so real. it's missing some cliques but everything else either tries too hard or is really stereotypical

I'm jealous.
It took me about ten years after hs for things from that era to look really dated so I could get a grasp on what really encapsulated the quotidian fashion of the time, rather than the stylish stuff that nobody wore. The more distance I get the more ridiculous it looks and hilarity ensues.
Ps Ymmv as a visual artist.

I lost the mohawk somewhere along the way. I like to think it's still out there, somewhere, listening to the Dead Kennedys and stirring things up. Of course, it probably became a librarian at a modestly sized private college on the East Coast where it still thinks of itself as "moderately radical" and supported Kucinich through the last few elections, but secretly thinks its neighbors are judging it because its lawn isn't quite green enough and maybe its propane grill isn't really saying that its quite as successful as it really should be, given its age and everything, and maybe Home Depot will have a reasonable sale this weekend.
Not sure about movies, but a Color Me Badd video would cover it.
I take that back. Too many dressed like extras from Dazed and Confused.
This is much easier with music videos.
Then why did he put the Devil in me?
Mean Girls is pretty accurate too.
