    Sweet rig. My first computer.

    Specs:
    CPU: Zilog Z80 (single core)
    CPU clock speed: 3.25 Mhz
    CPU Transistor count: 8,500
CPU performance: 1 MFLOP (a generous estimate)
    RAM: 16 KB (with expansion)
Storage: cassette tape deck, maybe 50 KB on a tape, incredibly unreliable
Storage transfer rate: 300 bits per second average
    Screen: black and white television
Screen resolution: 64x44 pixels with built in graphics
    Weight: 12 oz (without tv)
    Cost: $$425 in 2017 dollars

36 years later, my current computer specs (laptop)

    Specs:
    CPU: Intel i7-7700HQ (quad core)
CPU clock speed: 3.8 Ghz 1170 times faster
CPU Transistor count: 1.5 billion est 176000 times more
CPU performance: 32 GFLOP est 32000 faster
    RAM: 16 GB 1,000,000 greater
Storage: 1TB HD with 256 GB SSD 20,000,000 times more storage
Storage transfer rate: 3300 MB/s 10,000,000 faster loads
Screen: 17" HD color driven by GTX 1070 graphics card god mode of difference
Screen resolution: 1920x1080 736 times pixel count
Weight: 8.3 pounds 10 times heavier but you have the 'tv'
Things the ZX81 doesn't have: Internet connectivity, excellent sound, good keyboard, tons of software
Cost: $1700 4 times the cost

Actually this makes me feel a bit young for some reason.

I remember my first experience with a tape drive. It was at the Wonder Works Children's Museum in The Dalles. I spent a summer there with my grandparents and grampa regularly gave me a quarter for admission. It was a pretty good walk to get there too so it kept me occupied for the better part of the day, especially if I found a nice bit of shadetree and fluffy clouds. For some reason my grampa knew how to get smart young boys to venture outside to play...

I thought that tape drive was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. But by the end of that summer I'd come to appreciate the blistering speed and accuracy of my Apple IIe's 5.25 floppy drive. Today I'd also be annoyed by the need to rewind, but that's only because VCR's are done.

Frickin dip-switches to set the damn time on a VCR. It's like the plan was to create AV nerds.
For some, "how", not "why", is the fundamental unit of measure for curiosity. This divergence is neither parallel, nor straight. Where one might have a "why?-5" problem, it might only be a "how?-2" question. But then, there are also many things where the "why?" is immediately obvious but the "how?" is best measured in centuries of perpetual wonder. Both approaches have their drawbacks.

If one is superior, the other is unaware of it.

I was asked my age today and had to do the math.

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?

Young people saying they aren't young. The other day I heard someone say, and I quote, "22 isn't young!" It's easy to be confident I remember verbatim because young people use such short sentences.

I think not wanting to be perceived as young is the surest sign that you see yourself as young.
