Wouldn't really call 31 to 38 narrow... that's a 10% difference. Still, a shame. Some ex co-worker I have on Facebook from down there was going on about how there's "other problems that should be solved first", "who's going to pay for it", "not practical to implement 1st world policies in 3rd world countries", blah blah blah. Almost wanted to say something but then I'd just be the stupid yankee talking about things he doesn't understand.

Yeah, I didn't post a thing about it on FB because all I ever do with political posts now is take them down a few weeks later. I also think that discussing things on FB changes exactly nothing.

That old Catholic boat anchor continues to drag on South America. All the countries are going to struggle until that particular institution gets marginalized.

No article in English but the removal of a Virgin Mary statue from a public Law Faculty in Argentina is on all the news now. xD The assembly that voted on its removal put a green neckerchief (pro-choice symbol) and an orange one (separation of church and state) where the virgin used to be. The statue was then taken to a nearby police station for the cops to decide what to do with it. That was my favorite part.

Looks like the pro-choice movement revived the demand for the separation of church and state.

Panic Button Hit On Argentina Peso

Anyone who likes Macri and does not miss the mediocre days of the Kirchner duo—namely the quasi-socialist, closed economy of Cristina Kirchner —should be worried. Macri is up for reelection next year. Argentina is in the tender loving arms of the International Monetary Fund again. He wants to tell bond lords in New York that this time is different. He’s right. It’s worse—because the country does not have a commodity supercycle on its side, its nearest trading partner (Brazil) is pretty weak, and the peso, meanwhile, is weaker than ever. Inflation is out of control. Only Venezuela is worse. And the worse this gets for the peso, the worse it gets for Macri who is counting on the best IMF package in the country’s history. If he fails, the Peronistas take over.
I just want to make a tiny correction. Macri is not up for reelection next year. Presidents who get toppled don't get a reelection.

I just happen to be reading a book about the 2001 default. I think the IMF will be a little more reticent this time to cut the lifeline.

Trump may be politically incorrect, but Bolsonaro, potentially Brazil's next president, "goes way, way further." He's 2nd in the polls after a former president, Lula, of the Workers Party. But Lula is serving a 12 year sentence for corruption and the court has ruled that he can not be a candidate.

Trump may be politically incorrect, but Bolsonaro goes way, way further. In this interview alone, he advocated the possibility of unbridled state violence; equated homosexuality with pedophilia; and defended Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, whose henchmen raped women with dogs, as well as Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has boasted of personally killing criminal suspects.

He has a long history of invective against gays, racial minorities and women. In 2014, he told a Congresswoman, “I wouldn’t rape you because you do not deserve it.” Yet after spending decades in the political wilderness, the candidate for the right-wing Social Liberal Party is now being courted as a serious player in Brasília, and is feted by crowds of thousands on the road.
The guy is over the top. Here he is saying that he is going to shoot people from the Workers Party and send them to Venezuela that they like so much where they can eat grass. Ironically, vilifying the opposition as enemies is reminiscent of the two most recent Venezuelan presidents.

Lootings of supermarkets have begun (one of the precursors of the last meltdown in 2001). The peso keeps depreciating. Stocks plummetting. The Health and Labor ministries are to be eliminated. Exports are being taxed again (taxes that should never have been removed).

People who put dollars in the bank

    Spoiler: (parenthesis)

can't get them out. They need special permission to do so. That's basically an admission that they won't get their dollars back at all.

In the middle of all this, the depty chief of staff resigned after reciting a buddhist poem. Twilight, the time of monsters.
