    Words you like

From the old forum. Sans Kuranes who doesn't seem to have made the jump.

    Let me start:

Colourable. As in a 'colourable answer' - which expresses a concept I have often thought but did not have a word to attach to it. I do now.

Words without adequate equivalents in other languages are lovely: "rigmarole", "accomplished" or "fond" spring to mind.

Also constructions with "shall" and "should", which would be impossible to translate literally.

And shan't of course! Very few people in my generation use that word (or use "may" very often either instead of "can" which would once have been considered impolite), but my grandmother does without fail.

A good word without an equivalent which has an interesting history is pasquinade.

The Irish word for buttery (as in, where butter is made) is "butracht". Can't help smiling every time I see it.
