systems of personal notes, during projects, hobbies, private research, casual ideas..

    .... etc.
I've often made-do with the over-simple method of using txt files to write things down in, even for more important things sometimes.

I'm looking for a more organised method to record my data. I just don't want the 'organising' part to take too much effort.

I'm considering using Excel spreadsheets more often. I expect I'll find some useful enough features to sort out what I want, but I'm wondering if there's better options I haven't thought of.

For example, if I want to make a list of chemical compounds, noting a whole series of attributes and comments on each one, and be able to sort them or categorize them by the different attributes on demand.
This sounds like it could be achieved with a database system but I'm thinking that would be overkill, and result in the "organising" part becoming a diversion from the casual data-keeping I'm trying to do.

So generally, I want to know what other people have found to be good solutions for this sort of thing, any recommendations?
Perhaps there are more lightweight spreadsheets? more powerful, better spreadsheets?
    Simple standalone databases?
Some sort of organised notes system?

-hoping something like this will happen:
Why don't you just..... ..... Oh yeah I hadn't thought of that.....
How about you use ....... Wow ok, I didn't know ..... existed

    cheers.

Personally, I've used a combination of the following. Probably nothing novel, but here goes:
    • text files
    • word documents, etc
    • excel/spreadsheet documents
    • wiki (both self-contained and database-backed)
    • a robust search index over all of the above

    Thanks Ptah.
Ok, a wiki is something I can look into using.
For now it is looking like using a spreadsheet is on the right track for my needs.
May also look into content management systems in the future though.
I'd still welcome more input, but I'll probably find what I need now anyway.
