    Science microthreads

As per the other place, a thread for discussing science articles that doesn't deserve their own thread.

I'll start with a Wikipedia entry on a somewhat obscure physical law rather than an article because it demonstrates how fully and logically (and from empiricism to a deductive system) the scientific method can explain x natural phenomenon. In this case, something that has always fascinated me, the electrical breakdown of gasses by Paschen.

No microthreads or threads for things that don't deserve their own thread! Wouldn't it be better to have a lot of little threads all over the place than one big thread? Maybe it doesn't matter, but I'm more likely to look at an individual thread. Anyway, there's my obnoxious opinion. Feel free to conclude that I'm full of shit, I don't mind with this particular topic.

On a side note, I confess to only understanding some of that ( probably out of laziness at this particular time), but does it apply to lightning, too?

    David Wong, regarding Chicago
Six centuries ago, the pre-Colombian natives who settled here named this region with a word which in their language means "the Mouth of Shadow". Later, the Iroquois who showed up and inexplicably slaughtered every man, woman and child renamed it "Seriously, Fuck that Place". When French explorer Jacques Marquette passed through the area he marked his map with a drawing of a brownish blob emerging from between the Devil's buttocks.

Heh, this could be the scientific discovery of our lifetimes.

Maybe this seemingly innocuous scientific discovery lead to this one:

It makes the Hubble look like a toy. No wonder Thor mispronounced it.

Yellowstone is belching monstrous volumes of 2.5 Billion year old Helium gas.

Helium is very insistent in its anti-social stance of not playing with the other chemical children, so not much of an environmental concern.
Helium release however, is the typical first of a list of signs & signals before eruption.

Something worth keeping an eye on.

Considering the global helium shortage, I wonder if you could harvest it?

Eh but it's in a national park, so that would never work.
