    I'd never vote for a ...

What category(s) of person would you never vote for president?

I agree with the 50% of the Gallup Poll respondents who would never vote for a socialist. No need to confine yourself to the categories in the poll, which was skewed by including a socialist as the only adherent to a particular economic and governing philosophy.

If I was American definitely would never vote for an atheist. If you can't believe in non-existent entities how on earth are you supposed to be president of the most delusional country in the world?

    How about a devout socialist?

That's kind of a broad concept and it covers an awfully wide range of political positions, so I don't see why a priori it would rule anyone out.

Atheist though is a much more specific belief.

Atheists are no longer in the cellar? I'll be damned.

Slightly less damned than before though. Unless you're also a socialist.

I feel like there's something fundamentally deceptive in this poll though.

Voting on gender, sexual orientation, or religious belief doesn't exclude economic paradigm: as in, you could vote for a male or female, gay or straight capitalist, who practices x, y, or z belief. But you could not vote for a capitalist socialist, because the two are mutually exclusive. Therefore, the decision would be divided something like 47% socialist and 53% capitalist (not including "other"), which is a pretty close divide, all things considered.

Also, the Pope, the head of the Catholic church, and who catholic republicans think they can ignore while, at the same time, invoking their beliefs, is pretty, dang left leaning—to the extent he may as well be called a socialist by U.S. standards.

Francis saves his harshest words for economic interests who “accept every advance in technology with a view to profit, without concern for its potentially negative impact on human beings.” They show “no interest in more balanced levels of production, a better distribution of wealth, concern for the environment and the rights of future generations. Their behavior shows that for them maximizing profits is enough.”....

he asserts, “restraints occasionally have to be imposed on those possessing greater resources and financial power.” He finds calls for “economic freedom” to be bogus when “real conditions bar many people from actual access to it.”

It doesn't make sense, then, that the division between Catholic and Socialist would be that wide, at least, not for anyone paying attention.

Historically there is a strong correlation between the two.

    Wow! Congratulations, Mormons!

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?
