In such seconds of decision entire futures are made

Describe a time where mere moments changed the rest of your life. Where you can't guess how it would have gone had things happened differently.

    Isn't this any moment, really?

The first in particular that springs to mind was about five years ago, when I took a trip to Vienna to tentatively see whether it was still the personal paradise I remembered. I had spent almost all my summer money on the train fare, but arrived late at the station and the doors were already closing... so I ran to the only one that still remained open, jumped in at the very last second and nearly knocked over the ticket inspector (she was not pleased). A few hours later I arrived in Vienna and went through the three happiest days of my life before I had to return to Berlin. Four months later I folded up my entire life in Germany and returned to Vienna for good.

Had I missed that train, I would probably still be in wretched Berlin, and most likely be a lot more miserable.

    What's so wretched about Berlin?

Given that your whole reason for going to the train station in the first place was to travel to Vienna, it seems more likely you would have just taken the next train.

    Compare this:

    With this:

Then add to that having to live amongst Northern Germans, their terrible food, rude manners and coarse speech, a lack of warm-hearted people, classical music and decent wine, and a salary that was less than two-thirds of what I make now for twice the hours... and it's not so difficult to be miserable.

I was broke and the ticket I had was only valid for that particular train. I couldn't have gone if I had missed it, even if I had really wanted to; and I was merely ambivalent about it at the time. So in all likelihood I would have stayed for not knowing any better.

I had a brief conversation with Starbuck. I made an excuse to leave and was surprised when he looked worried, so I paused and he handed me his card.

Thankfully, I didn't cum in my ex girlfriend. Had I done that, it's quite likely she would have gotten pregnant and I'd be a middle-aged statistic today. A fat, divorced, unhappy turd paying half of my income to her.

I shot all over the mattress instead and consequently I am completely and wonderfully free.
