Democrats: Bringing them back into the fold

    https://www.c-span.org/video/?c46314...orporate-media

In this interview, starting at around 04:20 - 4:55, Bernie brags that "My campaign brought millions of people into the political process, the vast majority of which voted for Hillary Clinton."

I've read socialist articles that mercilessly criticized Bernie for playing exactly this role, but I never fully bought it. Sure, he sold out and became a Hillary shill, but that was just to prevent a Trump presidency. Noam Chomsky probably would have done the same.

But in this interview, it sounds as if Bernie never actually intended to be President. The whole thing was to drum up support for the Democratic Party and un-jade the millions of people who (correctly) identified their party as the same evil as the Republicans.

They're doing the same thing, now. They're going to try to run a candidate that is somewhat anti-establishment, but of course not too anti-establishment. Long-term, this is a losing strategy for the Democrats, who have essentially become the party of the elite. Until (unless) we have an actual left-wing party established, one with significant support, I see the country being run by right-wing populism for a long period of time.

The far left was calling him a "sheep dog" the moment he opened his mouth.

I don't know if he can be a presidential candidate anymore because he's too fucking old already. But maybe someone properly "radical", if the democratic party learns anything from all this. It is my hope they don't learn.

Yeah... Bernie always referenced Scandinavia; hardly a hot bed of communism. More an ideal of social responsibility.

I guess Kanye just gave a 40-minute rally at one of his shows saying he's running in 2020.

He said he didn't vote, but is a Trump supporter.

I went to a meeting by Socialist Alternative in NYC today. The purpose of the meeting was ostensibly to organize against Donald Trump.

When I arrived, some old guy who'd been with the party for 30 years started talking to my SO and I. First he started off by telling us that they had a presence in 40 something countries. "Including China!" he exclaimed enthusiastically to my Asian SO. He also rattled off a list of some cities they had a presence in in the US. I asked him if they were in Detroit, and he wasn't sure. In fact, he replied, "Why, are you from Detroit?" I had to explain to him the problems in Michigan. From there, he rambled about their involvement with some trade unions in Michigan, and how he himself is a Teamster. I sort of stopped paying attention after that, but my already low expectations had suddenly gone into free-fall.

The meeting started with a panel of young folks who couldn't have been with the party for long. The opening speaker announced themselves as "against racism, sexism, and homophobia," and that was it. Nothing about class warfare, nothing about the wealth inequality, nothing about joblessness or homelessness, nothing about medical care. Just racism, sexism, and homophobia. She then introduced the next speaker, who actually knew how to speak. He talked about the disaster of Donald Trump, but frequently mentioned the promise of Bernie Motherfucking Sanders several times. He even used Sanders' term "Billionaire Class," talked about how Sanders had been cheated out of the Primaries, and said that we should have an open ear for what Sanders has to say going forward. Nothing about how Sellout Sanders did a complete 180 at the end and showed how empty his rhetoric was. They went on to say some half-hearted stuff about BLM, about an oil pipeline and Scott Walker (no mention at all of Flint), and how we need to band together with the trade unions. That was after he talked about how we need to divorce ourselves from the Democratic Party.

OK so you're establishing yourself as against the Democrats, but you're endorsing Bernie and the Teamsters? We left shortly after.

Oh yeah. My point is, this is the state of the American Left at the moment. This is where we have to build from.

    We're so totally fucked.

I'd like to see you make a counterpoint thread to my blog.

"The Secret World of New York Socialists, Explored"... I'd make that my morning read in an instant.

At the moment, it seems that that'd be the world's shortest book blog. There is no world, secret or otherwise. There's some activists for various causes that think that because their cause is progressive, that makes it socialist, but that's about it.

Oh, so like the "socialists" here, then.

    Ah well.
