    Wet foot, dry foot

Obama repeals 'wet foot, dry foot' policy

Somehow I didn't see that one coming.

This is gonna shake things up in an already shaken-up Cuba.

They could do an exchange with the Americans who have escaped to Cuba...

I don't see anything wrong with it. What's the cost/benefit?

Seems like one of those things that isn't going to affect the US much at all.
Violence is never the right answer, unless used against heathens and monsters.

Hasn't this been the policy for quite some time now? Elian had to go back, which personally I thought he should have stayed in Miami. Now he's a full fledged communist.

Miami has been the new Cuba for over 20 years.

Hmm ... just realised the poll is a bit ambiguous like does good idea mean that the wet foot, dry foot policy was a good idea, or that repelling it was a good idea.

It seems that was more of a custody battle than an immigration issue though.

    Too many Cubans voting Republican.

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?

The benefit for the US is that there are a lot of young people in Cuba who are going to be very angry and the regime will accumulate dissidents instead of getting rid of them. If that accelerates change within the island it will benefit the US because a huge market will open up right in front of it. Cuba is not exactly a small place.

It's weird listening to them talk about going to the US, because on one hand you're thinking, how can these people want to go to the same country that has been strangling their economy for so long? But they have so much pent up frustration against the regime that sneaking away to Miami in the night was something they regarded as their only hope to get ahead in life. Even if they were not trying to escape, just knowing the option existed was a consolation.

It was a custody issue, as Utisz said. But no, a 6-year old child shouldn't be taken away from his only living parent because his country's politics is disapproved of by the US. That's when Gloria Estefan made my shit-list btw.

Good idea/bad idea refers to the latest decision.

For me it was 'Get on Your Feet.'
