I went in largely oblivious. Didn't watch any trailers. I just heard it was a third person action-adventure type game produced with "indie AAA" aspirations. I wanted to "vote with my wallet" to support both of those gaming notions. So, I played the first few hours and was simply blown away. Rather, this is the first game in which I've truly felt what others must call "immersion", so better put I was sucked in. Taking a step back, I see why/how that could be the case. No hud, tight camera angles, very well integrated "game"-ness, excellent visual and audio presentation... it all added up to feeling like I was controlling -- or even playing a part in -- a movie, not playing a game.

Only after I played the first stretch of the game did I go and do some homework, super curious about how such a thing came to be. I had no familiarity with the other games by this studio. I mean, I'd heard of DMC, but it never interested me. What a fucking achievement they have here.

    ...

Don't get me wrong, I like me plain old video game mayhem like GTA, or classic video game-ness like Metroid, etc. But after What Remains of Edith Finch, and now Hellblade? It sounds sappy, but I'm starting to actually experience how games can reach out into an "artform". I'm glad there is both, and I welcome things from either end or any point between.

Interesting camera for melee. The parry system and combat reminds me somewhat of Metal Gear Rising at a glance.

    No hud
I'd like to see this more. The first time I experienced this was with ICO, which is another longtime favorite, more-so than Shadow of the Collosus.

Shadow of the Colossus was incredible, but I agree that ICO was better. It engaged stronger sentiment. The bond with the horse in SotC was pretty solid by the end, but the bond with Yorda was lightyears ahead. You really have something special when you can make players emotionally invested in a long escort quest.

Many games allow you to turn off the HUD in the settings. But mini-maps are hard to turn off. Hell, I want one in meatspace.
I believe I've discovered the key to being prolific: stay busy.

So I got another hour or so into Hellblade. Past the first two "tests", the first two bosses, basically. Damn I am liking this game.

I had an itch to replay Edith Finch for a second time, a breezy thing I got done in just over an hour. Fun to pick out little details I missed the first time, knowing what the whole thing is about this time.

I've got to get back to this. Haven't finished it yet. After a couple months on Horizon Zero Dawn I'm missing the depth of TW3.

    ----

    I picked up Bioshock 1, 2, 3 on a sale. It's fairly disturbing. It's stressful to play.

    Hellblade looks amazing.

I'm considering whether to pick up the batman collection thing and deus ex. Or maybe I should do something with my life.

Just played the first few hours of Metroid: Samus Returns.

This --- THIS --- is what a Metroid game should be.

Even if this game was unplayable garbage -- which it is not, which it is the exact opposite of -- it would be worlds, quantum leaps better than all of the Metroid Prime games put together.

Metroid Prime can fuck right off. I mean it. Just die. Leave this universe. Get lost like the aberration that it is, and take all its fans with it for all I care.

Metroid is a third person platformer action game in essence. Not a "first person adventure". First person and third person platformer -- mutually exclusive gameplay elements, and so in essence, Metroid cannot and should not ever be a first person game. Ever.

Even Metroid: Other M -- for all its abysmal failures, by virtue of being a third-person platformer-ish game, is vastly superior to anything any Metroid Prime (first person) game could ever achieve. Categorically so. By fucking definition. And did I mention that Other M is utter shit, insultingly so? Still categorically and inescapably better than Prime, beyond question.

This rave inverted as a rant to dig the deep, deep valley (wrought by Metroid Prime) to which Metroid: Samus Returns is a staggering, unequivocal peak.
