This was my first favorite Elliott song and it still kinda feels like an anthem:

This song reminds me of my friend who I used to drink with and talk about suicide:

This is the one I'll play on the sidewalk when I'm an old homeless drunk:

This one reminds me of her, it's just too beautiful:

    His only love song:

Another one that reminds me of old times:

Also he did the Beatles better than the Beatles:

I learned it! Nothing's too hard except for the "and everybody's scared of this place" riff. I did have to work hard enough to learn this song that I still remember it 15 years later.

Alameda and Independence Day are way more baffling to try to figure out, imo.

Angeles is my fave for the last couple of years. I discovered him via Needle in the Hay in the Royal Tenenbaums, although I probably heard Miss Misery when he was nominated for an Oscar (maybe the last time I watched). I don't crave sadness crack as much as I used to but I have a walking mix I listen to often with him in the rotation. I almost never skip one of his songs. They're all the perfect length. I put him right there with Chet Baker, Nick Drake and Hank Williams on the Mount Rushmore of musical futility porn. He was probably the best. Singular artist. Love him. He made me feel less alone countless lonely times.

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?

listening to elliott smith makes me think of people in my life who've slipped through my fingers. i mean that in every sense, but mostly it's "emotional long distance."

for me, it's the music of not being able to reach the people you love.

angeles is my fav for right now and i'm not sure why but i think it's because it doesn't remind me of anyone else but myself. it's about having to prove yourself and knowing that nobody can really help you. it's about being at a crossroads and going down the hard path, motivated by anger and pain. it's really like one road disguising itself as a choice, or something.

there's no way for me to relate to that song more literally, since LA isn't a destination for me, it's coming home.

anyway... every time i listen to him i'm just so grateful for how he chose to spend his time on earth.

I picture the lyrics as from the perspective of an exploitative industry type full of promises that are unfulfillable. It gives me some small relief that I never really had any success in packaging my artistic endeavors and wound up under the influence of one of these people. I commodified my narrow range of practical competence and sort of left that little creative light inside to atrophy. It's not the best case scenario but I feel like I'd probably have died young if I were under the pressure to mine that vein, which most likely isn't as rich as I'd like to think or at least not rich enough to sate a businessperson. Especially the fragility that Eliot commodified. Recipe for disaster. Also, greatness.
