What's most interesting about that is that there was only a 77% drop in traffic when everyone thought they were going to die.

Obscure fact of the day - 23% of internet porn users will continue masturbating even when faced with nuclear annihilation.
But it's not an addiction, they can quit anytime they want.

And a handful of people probably discovered they have a missile alert / end of world fetish.

Apparently 48% of internet porn users are turned on by missile threat alerts.

    Stress relief?

Reminds me of a Louis CK joke (I think it was Louis CK) about how soon after 9/11 was it appropriate to masturbate.

Well, yeah, stress relief. But putting it down to missile fetish was far more amusing.

The false alarm statement wasn't until 8:45. By then, traffic was already back up to 60% of the usual. So most people were just like, "so we're all gonna die? Oh well, might as well go out with a smile."

Spoiler: They'll all end up like this guy at Pompeii.

The employee who sent out the Hawaiian missile alert thought it was a real thing

Supposedly a supervisor called him with the intent to run a drill. It was prefaced with the words “excercise exercise exercise” but the message also contained the words “this is not a drill.” Such a message would be against EMA policies and procedures. The employee sent out the real alert intentionally.

So far his claims about the supervisor have not been confirmed or denied.
