I cross mine too... although I never always - not sure when I picked that up.
Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

I was trained by the United States Navy to cross my zeroes and get accused of being wannabe eurotrash when I do it in civilian land USA.

Glimpses do ye seem to see of that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea; while the wildest winds of heaven and earth conspire to cast her on the treacherous, slavish shore?

I cross my zero and seven and z and I also put little tails on my lowercase l and t. It's all a result of doing math with a bunch of letters.

I picked up the habit of crossing zeroes from working in computing, where confusing zero with the letter "O" can be bad.

If you write the number 1 with a top tail so you won't confuse it with "I", then a crossed 7 won't be confused with 1. The crossed "Z" won't be confused with 2. I assume both practices are a European thing, not just German.
