Your Relationship to Pets & Naming Strategies

    are you their "owner"?

    "guardian"?

do you humanize your animals, become their "parent"?

    are you equals, therefore "companions"?

    what the hell are you?

    what's your pet naming strategy?

i can not guarantee that this thread will be a judgment-free safe space.

I am their owner, and mentor, and protector. They are my companion beast.

I give my aminals people names. A good friend of mine laughed until he nearly peed a little on realizing, then immediately telling me "You give your pets people names and your roleplaying characters pet names."

It honestly grates on me to hear pets referred to in traditional familial terms. It isn't because I don't care for them as I would a family member, it's just that I get really wigged out realizing that thinking of children as pets is accurate.
Most of time, when people ask why something terrible happened, they don't realize they are looking for someone to blame.

technically, I guess. though she's free to leave whenever.

    "guardian"?
    Yeah, definitely.

do you humanize your animals, become their "parent"?
humanize, yeah. I talk to her like she's a human all the time but I wouldn't say I'm her "parent" cause pet parents creep me out.

    are you equals, therefore "companions"?
Not equals but she's my companion.

    what the hell are you?
    I don't even know.
    what's your pet naming strategy?
    Norse gods.

    Guardian and companion. Not equals.

I'm literally taken the decision to be absolutely responsible for her life. In some ways its even more problematic than with a child: because with a child, you're at least notionally developing the thing to be independent and can communicate somewhat eventually.

With pets, I've chosen to take them in. I have to provide for them to keep them alive. And one day, after a number of years together, I'm likely going to have to be there and take care of things when they die.

Guardian. When the bird is perched on my finger all puffed-up, I sometimes whisper "I'll protect you" into his fluffy belly.

Humanise him? I find it odd when people call themselves "mom of x" with regards to a pet. I talk to my bird but generally only in expressions I know he understands (and audibly answers to).

    what's your pet naming strategy?
Opera characters, Latin and Greek names.

(Please don't change aminals. That's golden meme potential right there.)

Owner and guardian and person. In the case of my current dog, I'm also a mother, because she treats me like one. But that's not a fundamental way that I would interpret my relationships with animals. She's just got a childish personality.

    what's your pet naming strategy?
My dog arrived with a name that her previous people gave her.

My normal naming strategy is uncreative. I just go with the obvious. I had a cat named Cat and a bird named Paulie.

Naming strategy - just whatever name I like. My rats were called Hieronymus (Hieronymouse! from Hieronymus Bosch) and Brunhilda (from that Quentin Tarantino movie).

We recognise each other's unique strengths and weaknesses, and delegate tasks/responsibilities based on that. Though it is also good to move outside your comfort zone.

Haha never heard that before. Did you actually pronounce it as fish?
