Do you mean like this: For me, underneath, I think it's not unreasonably likely that we are heading towards the extinction of our species. Or at least that we have irreversibly severely fucked up a lot of things. Yet, removed from that, my every day existence is pretty damn good. I feel very positive about some great things I can do in life. But the juxtaposition of these two scenarios is a little disconcerting. Nevertheless, I think I'm virtually powerless to stop our overall direction, so I may as well just enjoy life. Actually I had an idea a while ago that maybe our global consciousness could be likened to how most of us view our mortality: we're distantly aware that we'll die someday, but most of us don't really consciously contemplate it that much, and just deal with it with regret at the end and it becomes more of a reality rather than a kind of abstract idea. I don't think we really accept that we could very reasonably disappear. Also: maybe it would actually be a good thing.

    ----

    I don't know if I'm "at peace".

I used to be a little envious of people who had lots of money. I realised I don't care about that anymore. Maybe I just have enough money to do what I want. And there's no point being envious.

Nah, I didn't take it that way, however, I knew by your post you were talking about the suffering of others. I based my answer on some of the horrible things I know about but also the tendency of news outlets to use the most sensational and startling shock value language they can to keep people hooked- Fear Porn. I hate to see or hear about people suffering and purhaps more, animals suffering and the hands of cruel or neglectful people. I'm unable to bear it so I never indulge my morbid curiosity very far. If there is anything I can do to ease the suffering in my circle of influence I do. Anyone who knows me, knows that.

I am bothered by things that happen but I'm still at peace.

I started to write the thread saying, "Are you Zen" but then I looked the word up and realized I didn't know what it meant. Even saying, "Are you at peace?" doesn't really convey what I was talking about. "Are you free?" encompasses way too much to make a simple thread- that'd be more like a subforum in itself.

"Are you free from anxiety?" is more what I mean but one might think it should have been in the Psychology subforum and I don't want it there. None of the therapy I got curbed my anxiety. One can see by this article I wrote in January, that even that recently I was still racked with anxiety. I should point out my concept of anxiety was woefully incomplete when I wrote that. Whoopsie!

Being anxiety free still doesn't convey all of it but putting all of that in words that are clear, concise, and correct escapes me yet..

I thought I was at peace until I received an email from one of my professors saying: dear PureViolence remember today at 4pm we have the course final exam.
    Then I lost my shit.

I experience the most anxiety when I've not created or accomplished anything for a while. I've got an inborn need to do stuff that has a tangible result. Jobs in which I must maintain a status quo rather than learn, create, build, and improve cause me to fall apart inside. For me, peace is an outgrowth of being satisfied with what I've been doing.

Some say I'm retarded, others say I'm a genius.
For now I think I passed the course.

No. Been restless for a while now.

But I'm not eager to be in a peaceful mode anyway, so I'm good with the anxiety.
What's the difference? It's just soda, bro.

since you did post this in the philosophy sub... to me believing isn’t the issue. it’s a matter of the size you want your world to be. i could feel at peace if i just shrunk my world to include only my own well-being. that would be easy to manage and control, but i choose a larger world and a larger life where the suffering outside my own matters. i could even feel at peace with my own suffering and accept that, but it’s sociopathic to me to have “acceptance” of others’ suffering add to my own feeling of peace.

i choose that awareness for myself and that’s why i say stuff like feeling “at peace” is overrated. at worst it’s emotionally parasitic, if i can still see others’ pain and say i feel good.

    that’s just me.
When I'm thinking about the pain someone else is experiencing, that's pretty much all I'm doing. My mirror neurons must be functioning at peak efficiency. I'd be pretty useless if I wasn't a master of shrinking my awareness. I have to catalog all the shit I can't fix to my sub-conscious where it can cringe me into an early grave at a much lower rate of speed, and I have to tell myself over and over that the only behavior I'm even remotely responsible for is my own, and that I'm not doing anyone any favors by committing out of a sense of responsibility to more than I can possibly do. I can only control my own behavior and do my best to perform well at the tasks I have chosen to prioritize. You should be able to be at peace if you are doing your part, at least some of the time. You should be able to shrink your awareness after doing what you can do for long enough to smell the roses, or fall asleep at night.
