    Things I've won by chance:

A pair of airline tickets at an office party. I don't remember where we went with them, but it wasn't Alaska or Hawaii.

A $200 gift certificate from some provider of overpriced stuff no one needs, at another office party. I used it on Beers of the Quarter (too many IPAs for my liking) and Neckties of the Quarter (I got a couple I really liked).

In general I've been lucky at office party prize drawings.

Things I've won by my own merits, at least sorta:

The county spelling bee, which qualified for the regional. The winner of the regional qualified for the big enchilada in DC. I finished third in the regional. My concentration slipped and I lost my place in spelling "stereoscope", which I knew cold. Fuck. The county bee was the last time I remember praying, between turns at the mic. I found it effective in clearing the mind. I know now that I was meditating.

Some board game tournaments at conventions.

Two baseball fantasy leagues with coworkers. I won them both with "Moneyball" tactics: I indentified inefficiencies in the "market" and exploited them better than anyone else. If only I could do this shit for real money.

    I forgot another little victory.

The software company I worked for put together a special build of our product, which someone in management called the "clean tape". (This was the 1980s; we still used mag tapes then.) All of us, regardless of title, were drafted to test it. In an attempt to create a festive atmosphere, a pool was created to guess how many bug reports we would generate.

I knew our product as well as anyone and I thought the tape was anything but "clean". I guessed there would be roughly 1,000 bug reports, but to stay a bit on the low side entered 965. (Yes, I still remember the number 30+ years later.)

My entry won. After I bought the first round of drinks there was about $12 left. Still, money you win is the sweetest money there is.

I won some kind of contest on CompuServe in the 90s by figuring out something and I think it was the author of this book who sent me a copy. This is the one I received:

I was an inventor then and still am but I never had any interest in reading it for over 20 years. Turns out it got good reviews and was called legendary.
