Count me as a shingles survivor also. It made its way to my left forehead, eye, and cheek. I remember pain, swelling about a half inch out, pus running out from my skin, and fascination that it wouldn't spread to the right side of my face as it evolved.

Similarly, I was going through a divorce and lacked sleep also. It surprised me to find my immune system so handicapped.

When it began, I was furiously searching for rashes on the internet to diagnose myself. I kept backing up into the term "shingles" and avoiding the links...thinking to myself, "No way I have shingles. I'm not that old and I'm athletic to boot." Finally, I clicked the link and it was obviously shingles lol. Went to the doctor 2 hrs later who looked at me for 2sec and said, "You've got shingles and we need to rush you to a specialist to evaluate your eye, because you may lose it." ....shit...

Luckily my eye survived as well as I, and I only have scars on my left forehead to remind me of the experience.

High level athletes are a high risk group for shingles because they push themselves to the limits of their endurance and leave their immune system a pittance to work with...so your athleticism may have been a contributing factor, but only if you were really pushing yourself.

    That'll teach 'em.
Most of time, when people ask why something terrible happened, they don't realize they are looking for someone to blame.

Depending on your target demographic you might also consider, "that'll learn 'em"

I either need a pair of bib overalls or a deep fried twinkie to pull off that dialect with authenticity. I have neither.

Oh, culebrilla. I had no idea what shingles was.

It's called culebrilla here ("snake") because people used to think they got it from snakes. Popular myth claims that if the two tips of the "snake" touch (like going around your body), then you die. Obviously that's impossible because the nerves don't wrap around like that, but I remember a couple of improvised childhood ghost stories involving this phenomenon.
