I don't quite get Col. Terry Virts assertion that:

A space force would have to be distinct from the Air Force, retired Air Force Col. Terry Virts argued, because it requires two different skillsets to launch and pilot planes and spacecraft.
When, historically, most Astronauts have came from the Air Force or the Navy, specifically because of their transferable skills.

Although the American space arsenal has suffered many beaurocratic set-backs by having their space based weapons systems moved from Air Force, Navy and Army control to be placed under the control of DARPA who ended up scrapping them - now for the government to suddenly realise they do need those programs to be operational.

Something General Goerge Keegan warned about in the 70's. - he was accused of being a conspiracy theorist/alarmist.

Turns out, he was just ahead of his time.
Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

Yes jet flight experience is still mandatory to be a NASA astronaut and can be accomplished through military service, but almost 34% have had no military service background.

    That's not an insignificant minority.

But yeah unfortunately, I think Col. Virts could have said, "America. Fuck Yeah!", and accomplished as much. We've all seen NASA TV, Gravity, etc.
