George leaped off a bridge. George leapt off a bridge. Leapt doesn't sound right; I've never heard anyone say leapt. Actually I don't hear that word in its whatever tense period very often. Leaped final answer. Well, wait leapt as in leept or leapt as in lept. If the latter that's what I meant originally when I said no. Hmm, now I'm thinking if leapt is pronounced like leaped and not lept, then I'm cool with it. Undo final answer if that'sthe case, I could go for either.

Just to confuse matters, I write leaped but I pronounce it leapt. Same with most other examples (sleeped pronounce slept, weeped pronounced wept). I guess I never really thought about it before - the act of modifying my pronunciation without modifying the spelling.

But leapt, slept, etc. seem like crazy American spellings that are missing letters. Especially with sleep type words where a vowel is disappearing in the past tense.

Here's another one: Sneaked vs Snuck

I never say "sneaked;" I always say "snuck." But I always see it written as sneaked.

I think I just avoid writing it, myself.

    He snuck around....

I guess it looks all right.
