The insulting underestimation of language work

Well, today I was given a private machine translation for review, for a revision fee. I said it's the same as a translation to me and that Google Translate is basically state of the art in comparison to all the machine translation tools. I said I just couldn't do it in that amount of time. Anyway they removed the machine translation and offered it as a real translation for a translation fee. I said yes and now I have to lose sleep doing it in time.

What's the biggest pain in the ass thing you've translated?

The technical manual for a machine that nobody knows exists. Or maybe a scientific paper on gene therapy from French. Basically things I wouldn't know in any language. But most of them are a pain in the ass. All the nice stuff has low rates.

Yikes. Which languages are you comfortably familiar with? I guess what I'm asking is which are your favorites to deal with?

I translate only into English and Spanish, from English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. But I don't do legal or technical things from Portuguese since that's outisde my comfort zone.
